Hey, I’m Lindsay, the host of Make Sense w/ Lindsay T., Lady Engineer®, a weekly podcast where my guests and I simplify complex topics at the intersection of people & technology. We analyze whatever hot mess is in the news, evaluate trending innovations through a human-first lens, and take deep dives on a need-to-know basis.

Did you know 16% of self-reported identity theft victims in 2023 considered suicide?

If you’ve grown numb to the constant stream of data breaches and compromised password notifications, it’s time to get the blood flowing again.

First, let’s talk about one reason why cybersecurity issues have become so normal we individuals barely acknowledge them. In the physical world, professional engineers who design our bridges, roads, and highways must maintain professional engineering licenses and certifications through regular continuing education credits.

Our society has these requirements in place to protect our physical safety.

In the digital world, software engineers and developers working on our digital security and financial infrastructure do not have such requirements applied uniformly across the industry.

One reason our society doesn’t have these requirements is that mental health impacts are far less perceptible.

It’s time to be proactive, not reactive.

Jumoke Dada joins me in today’s episode of Make Sense to discuss systemic cybersecurity initiatives as well as actionable tips on securing your identity and data.

We also talk about:

  • How companies are prioritizing secure data storage and compliance
  • The role of the National Cyber Director
  • Why you should be using a Google Voice number when submitting your information online

Choice Quote

“Don’t click attachments, don’t click on links. You’d be surprised how many people still do this because [hackers] play on familiarity and they use names or faces. Bow we have so much happening with AI, they use who you know, they use those names to fish you or to try to get information from you.”
