Is Hiring a Developer for Your Startup Idea Your Next Step?

Here’s what you need to know before hiring a software developer

Is hiring a developer your next startup move?

Let’s pretend that you’re building a multi-use building for your community. Who is the first person you head to for help?

Do you go to the construction worker right off the bat?

The answer here is no. You might want to talk to an architect or the city’s zoning & licensing board to ensure your building is a complete success.

The same idea applies to your startup. Before talking to an app developer, before shelling out money to build out your vision, make sure you’re researching all of the important stakeholders: customers, advisors, competitors, partners, etc.

Just like an architecture firm may design a 3D miniature model of a construction project before going into build, you want to design and prototype a smaller scale bootstrapped version of your idea so you can get more validation.

Push your prototyping and rapid feedback iterations as far as you can go before talking to software developers. Once you’re absolutely clear on the exact minimum features THAT’S when you’re ready to ring up the construction worker to start actual build.

But until then… don’t waste your money. Focus on your customers and understanding the domain completely!
